But often women are attracted to intrinsic traits that men may or may not reward–and that in fact most men despise. Otherwise, why do women like the “lone wolf”? By definition, he does not have status conferred by other men.
There are whole categories of men whom most men find contemptible but whom women seem to really like. Those guys aren’t getting their status from the rest of is, they’re getting it despite us.
Part of the confusion arises from the fact that the conventionally high status man (CEO, quarterback) and the conventionally low status man (biker, drug dealer) are both interchangeable referred to as “alpha” so often. This is typically pointed out as if it were a fatal contradiction. But in truth there are traits common to both.
What women really seem to despise, or at least find not worthy of any note, is “average.” “Distinctive” at either end of the curve—for good or bad, defined conventionally or otherwise—is attractive.

@Obsidian #93,
Doubt and plausible deniability.
The dualistic nature of the women’s sexual strategy depends on men being kept in a state of uncertainty about that strategy. As men become more aware of the nature of women’s sexual pluralism the feminine imperative must invent and reinvent social and psychological controls to maintain that doubt and sustain women’s sexual selectivity.
