Cost of living flight is an interesting thing to watch in terms of its origins, be it cyclical drivers or more systemic changes. I left so Cal in 2009 and the motivation of lowering my overhead was central, but also just one of many other things. Sure, my sinking $800k house and (still) an hour+ commute each way was hard to make sense of for me, but at the time I was spending a lot of time at the mother ship in NYC and seeing what $800k might get you there was even more unappealing to me.
Eventually, “the weather” aspect relative to all of the expenses and generally tedious rhythm of life wore thin as well. Expensive housing markets can be a hard place to find that “balance” thing. But the tax load was silly and with no kids and a small mortgage, I was getting hammered (NY takes a cut too, if you work something like 20 days or more a year – resident or not). When I was asked to “retire” and my old lady traded up to her Alpha, I had no reason to fight those daily fights. I’m a lowly renter now. $1,100/Mo gets me a lovely little house with a yard, 5 minute bike ride to downtown and all of the sports stadiums, museums, and lively quarters of the city. Easy living. But yeah, it was 12 degrees yesterday. So its wool sweaters now. But the amount of “surplus” production on my part that it would take to lure me back into that kind of overhead would have to be staggering.
