Just as a side note (OT) Sir Nemesis, I wonder how old you thought I was? Too much older and some of my posts must have been pretty nauseating…my apologies. :-) Fortunately, I don’t look my age (yet, knock on wood). That’s the bad thing about marrying young, probably the only bad thing (for the woman). I like the proprietorship, “Back off bitches! We’ve been married over 20 years!”
But I have no fudge room for my age.
It’s always met with a shocked response, “Holy shit, really? How old were you when you got married?” And I can’t exactly say less than 15.

Yes, they were expected to work in, or near, the house: to grow stuff in the garden etc. But they weren’t expected to have jobs. If you cannot contribute to an employer’s profit with your work, he/she won’t give you a job. And a woman isn’t able to do profitable labor if she’s pregnant, or has small children, or she may decide to get pregnant and/or married anytime in the near future.
